How to protect yourself in an automobile accident

Auto accidents can be sudden and freighting experience and unfortunately, at some point in almost everyone’s life they will be involved in an auto accident. When involved in an accident regardless of whose is at fault there are several things you should keep in mind. Below is a short list of things to do immediately following the accident.

1. Never leave the scene of an accident. You could be subject to legal action up to and including prison time for leaving the scene of an accident. Always wait for the police to arrive on the scene and wait for them to instruct you to leave.
2. Never admit liability or discuss liability with the other driver. It is typical to want to assign the blame for an accident at the scene, don’t. Don’t admit fault, inattention, cell phone usage, etc. You could say something that can inhibit your ability to protect yourself in the future.
3. Information, Information, Information. Get as much information as possible at the time of the accident. You should carry a small notebook in the glove box of your vehicle to quickly jot down information after an accident. Immediately following an accident there are typically witnesses who pull over to make sure everyone is ok. These witnesses can sometimes quickly leave the scene and you are left with the persons involved in the accident fighting over what happened. Pay attention to the first few people on the scene and ask them for a business card or their phone number. Also get the other parties insurance and contact information. Write down their car make, model and license plate number. This information can become invaluable to you in the future.
4. Keep a disposable camera in the car. After an accident you should immediately take pictures of the damage and the people at the scene. Photograph the scene from as many angles as possible. Document the damage to the vehicles and persons. Take pictures of the street, the signs or stoplights, any debris, skid marks, etc.
5. Seek immediate medical attention. Any time you are involved in an accident you can sustain injury. A gash in the head is an obvious medical condition that requires immediate attention. But you might also sustain internal or soft tissue injuries that are less obvious but still dangerous. Often, you will experience an adrenaline rush after an accident that can mask the affects of your injuries.

These are just a few of the many things you should keep in mind immediately following an accident. No one can safeguard you from an accident, but you can safeguard yourself from additional damage by following these guidelines. If you have suffered injuries and/or property damages as a result of an automobile accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your damages. A skilled personal injury lawyer can use their experience to help sort through complicated claims and guide you through the compensation process. Don’t wait; contact an attorney as soon as possible to avoid a limitation of your rights.
